Recognising the similarities between business and Judo
the name given to people who do Judo, but then you knew that didn’t you? Thinking about Judo and businesses the other day, it occurred to me that there are several similarities between Judo and running a small business.
Judo is split into weight categories staring at less than 60 kilos and ending at 100+kg. The difference between the styles of fighting is quite pronounced. The light weight fighters will be fast and rely on speed while the heavyweights rely more on size and to some degree strength although there is skill there too of course. This is especially true when two opponents from different weight catergories fight each other as does happen regularly in our club training sessions. In these fights you will see the smaller fighter constantly moving and thus not allowing the larger player to take a firm grip of them.
Relating this to business, I think you would agree smaller businesses needs to be faster and more able to exploit opportunities. They need to be able to take advantage of an opening that may come their way and use it to its best effect, just as the small fighter does when fighting against a larger opponent in Judo.
